John O. Hayter III

A native son of Northwest Louisiana, John Hayter returned home in 1977 after earning his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His distinguished career in construction law began with his first client, who happened to be a painting subcontractor. Over 35 year later, John is one of the most sought after construction attorneys in the state, he is a managing partner and his client list is as long as it is distinguished.

John represents clients throughout the state of Louisiana and is often recruited by other firms to serve as local counsel. He is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court, United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal, all United States District Courts in Louisiana, and all Louisiana District Courts.

Few attorneys are experienced in handling arbitrations, an alternative and economical method of dispute resolution that avoids litigation.  Not only is he experienced, he has been trained to serve as an arbitrator by the American Bar Association’s Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc.  JAMS is the largest private alternative dispute resolution provider in the world, specializing in complex, multiparty, business, commercial and construction claims.

To assist in the legal education of the construction industry, John has given various seminars on the following topics: Louisiana Public Works Lien Law; Louisiana Private Works Lien Law; Miller Act Liens; Louisiana Public Bid Law; Suicidal Subcontract Clauses; Show Me the Money, Louisiana Collections Law; and The AIA 2007 Forms vs. Consensus Docs.

In an effort to give back to the communities of Northwest Louisiana, in appreciation for the opportunities afforded him, John has also been involved in many community organizations: Shreveport Chapter, Associated General Contractors (General Counsel, (1998-Present); Advisory Counsel, Chairman (2000-2001)); Bossier Chamber of Commerce (Director (1999-2001); Small Business Person of the Year Award, Professional Category – 1999).

John is also actively involved in numerous professional associations, including:  The Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel; Defense Research Institute; American Bar Association, Forum on the Construction Industry Committee; Louisiana State Bar Association, Fidelity, Surety and Construction Section; American Inns of Court, Harry Booth & Henry Politz Chapter; Associated General Contractors, Shreveport Chapter – Associate Member; and Northwest Louisiana Home Builders Association.
